A century ago, Maitland was the focus of an industrial revolution, driven by private companies intent on tapping the massive reserves revealed in surveys by the Government Geologist TW Edgeworth David in the late nineteenth century.

This event will explore the significance of the South Maitland Railway, one of Australia’s great pioneering enterprises and its role in the nation’s industrial and social development.

First-hand accounts of the logistics, challenges and celebrations associated with the ongoing restoration of two of the last 10 Class steam engines remaining in the world - Number 10 and Number 18 - will be presented, along with a tour of the Maitland Rail Museum.

Presented by Maitland City Library with Maitland Rail Museum Incorporated in celebration of SteamFest at the South Maitland Railway Workshops.
